Atmel today has announced their Sensors Xplained software drivers, a set of drivers that add software sensor support to the Atmel AVR Studio 5 Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

The new Atmel Sensors Xplained software drivers provide software support for a wide variety of sensors. The drivers easily integrate into AVR Studio 5 and provide driver and calibration support.

Sensors Xplained Sensor Manufacturers

For the initial release, the following sensor manufacturers are supported:

  • AKM
  • Bosch Sensortec
  • Honeywell
  • Invensense
  • Kionix
  • Osram Opto Semiconductors

High level application examples are available as library functions. Optimized software is available from both Atmel and several sensor suppliers. Support for sensor fusion algorithms is also available.

"There is increasing demand to incorporate sensors into a broad range of applications which makes it essential that there be support for a wide variety of microcontrollers," explained Adrian Woolley, Marketing Director for Microcontrollers, Atmel Corporation. "With Atmel Sensors Xplained software drivers and expansion boards, our customers can now quickly develop sensor applications with easy-to-use drivers and ready-to-use sensor boards to significantly accelerate their ability to rapidly bring prototype designs to market."

Hardware Support
The Atmel Sensors Xplained software drivers and expansion boards are plug-in compatible with all AVR Xplained series microcontroller boards. The Sensors Xplained software drivers support calibration and scaling, data conversion and interoperability for supported sensor manufacturers.

The Atmel sensor solution provides Engineers with the AVR Xplained processor board and development system, a sensors board for the Xplained processor board, and software drivers for the free Atmel AVR Studio 5.

There are presently three Atmel Sensors Xplained boards available now:

  • Atmel Inertial Sensor Board One
Includes an Invensense ITG-3200 3-axis gyro, Bosch Sensortec BMA150 3-axis accelerometer and AKM AK8975 3-axis magnetometer. Provides 9 degrees of freedom for inertial sensing.
  • Atmel Inertial Sensor Board Two
Includes an Invensense IMU-3000 3-axis gyro, Kionix KXTF9 3-axis accelerometer and a Honeywell HMC5883L 3-axis magnetometer. Provides 9 degrees of freedom inertial sensing.
  • Atmel Pressure Sensor Board One
Includes a Bosch Sensortec BMP085 barometric pressure for atmospheric and altitude sensing.
