More Serial Interfaces and Bacon than the Competition?

Texas Instruments Incorporated has introduced its new Tiva ARM Cortex-M4 microcontrollers. Tiva is part of TI's new C-Series, where C=Connectivity.

The first TI Tiva C-Series microcontrollers are the TM4C123x ARM Cortex-M4 MCUs and are TI's first Cortex-M-based MCUs built on their 65nm flash process technology.

The Tiva C Series TM4C123x MCUs were formerly known as Stellaris LM4F MCUs, are in production today and target home, building and industrial automation.

"We are excited to introduce our Tiva C Series MCUs because they truly are unique to the market.  Tiva C Series MCUs combine TI’s on-chip, high-performance analog, robust software ecosystem and system expertise in connected applications," quipped Scott Roller, VP, TI MCUs. "Tiva C-Series MCUs, along with our innovative low-power MSP430, real-time control C2000 and safety MCU platforms enable our customers to choose the perfect MCU to meet their design needs."

Texas Instruments Tiva Microcontrollers Features
Features of the Tiva C-Series Microcontrollers include:

  • 80MHz ARM Cortex-M4F floating point Core
  • 256KBytes Flash (40MHz)
  • 32KBytes SRAM
  • 2KBytes EEPROM
  • On-chip oscillator
  • Two Watchdog Timers
  • Twielve Timer/PWM/CCP Modules
  • 32-channel DMA
  • 8 UARTS
  • 4 SSI/SPI
  • USB 2.0 Host/Device/OTG
  • 2 CAN 2.0
  • Six I2C
  • LDO voltage Regulator
  • Three analog comparators
  • Two 12-bit ADC, up to 24 channels, 1MSPS
  • Temperature Sensor
  • Two Quadrature Encoder Inputs
  • Sixteen PWM Outputs

Tiva Development Tools
TivaWare for C Series MCUs provide "no-OS" software development. TI-RTOS is a common RTOS across all TI MCUs. Software development is supported with Code Composer Studio v5.

The new Tiva C-Series TM4C123G LaunchPad is an easy to use board that includes all the hardware needed to quickly get started with the Tiva. it interfaces with external components or custom daughter boards and incorporates USB, CAN, UARTs, I2C, and all oether interfaces of the TI Tiva C-Series.

Texas Instruments' Sensor Hub BoosterPack contains a selection of onboard sensors including positioning, temperature, light, and gyroscope. An "air mouse" application allows the Tiva to be used as a PC mouse.

Hmmm, Bacon!

The Tiva is supported by TI's own Code Composer as well as 3rd party tools chains such as Keil RealView, IAR Systems Embedded Workbench, and Mentor's Embedded Sourcery CodeBench.

Pricing and Availability
"The Tiva C Series TM4C123x MCUs begin at $2.15 USD at 10K quantities. The $12.99 USD EK-TM4C123GXL  Tiva ARM C Series LaunchPad is available for purchase now. View the entire TI MCU portfolio, order tools and download software.  TI’s extensive ARM processor portfolio offers optimized silicon (more than 500 ARM products from $1 to 5 GHz), software and development tools for a variety of industries.  Future Tiva C Series devices with Ethernet are forthcoming."
