Zilog, a wholly-owned subsidiary of IXYS Corporation, today has introduced a new Zilog family of low-power microcontrollers based upon the trusted 8051 architecture.

The Zilog Z8051 is an optimized 8051 architecture that only needs two clocks per instruction cycle. It boasts a single-cycle multiply, an LCD controller, and a 100nA STOP2 mode. It is built on a low-power 0.18um process.

"Zilog, as a part of IXYS, maintains a continuing commitment to supporting our customers with a long product life cycle, especially in power management, where IXYS has been growing worldwide. With the growth of digital power management in energy-efficient products, for clean energy generation, automation, appliances, automotive, lighting  and telecommunication, we believe that also offering the popular Z8051 allows us to accelerate the adoption of our microcontroller solutions in these markets," said Steve Darrough, Zilog's VP of Marketing.

Last year NXP exited the 8051 market, something that has widely been considered a bad move. Now, 8051 suppliers Zilog, Atmel, Microchip, and Silicon Labs are marching into NXP's customers, happy to design out NXP's 8051 along with any other NXP device they can get. Customers feeling buyer's remorse over choosing NXP have many comforting options to choose from.

"Zilog's Z8051 products and development kits are now available for customers that place orders through Zilog's distribution or representatives".
