NXP 8051 Microcontroller Replacements from Microchip
Feb 21, 2012 - 5:18:07 PM
Microchip Technology Inc., today announced that it will continue to manufacture 8051/80C51 microcontrollers and is happy to provide direct pin-for-pin replacements for most of those recently placed under "End-of-Life" (EOL) notification by NXP.
Microchip has had a line of 8051 microcontrollers since Microchip aquired SST in 2010
The 8051 Microcontrollers
NXP Semiconductor announced last year that it is exiting the 8-bit microcontroller business and has placed all of it's 8051 microcontrollers on EOL notification. While NXP Semiconductor has done this to focus on their 32-bit ARM business, it's rare for a successful 32-bit microcontroller product line to not have a successful 8-bit or 16-bit microcontroller product line by it's side (from what I've seen).
In April 2010 Microchip acquired Silicon Storage Technology, Inc. (SST) and their popular 80C51 microcontroller business. Microchip continues to sell and support these devices.
NXP 8051 Replacements
Microchip 8051 microcontrollers are drop-in replacements for the NXP P89LV51RB2, NXP P89LV51RC2, and NXP P89LV51RD2. There are also Microchip 8051 replacements for the NXP P89V51RB2, NXP P89V51RC2, and NXP P89V51RD2 EOL series of 80C51 8-bit microcontrollers.
Example replacements can be seen in the table below:

About 8051 Microcontroller Support
"Microchip has a history of supporting customers with long lifetimes on all of our product lines," said Randy Drwinga, vice president at Microchip Technology Inc. "We also have a strong presence in the industrial, automotive and medical markets, and understand that long-lifecycle product support is important to these customers. We welcome anyone currently using NXP's 80C51 MCUs who doesn't wish to redesign their end products to use our 100% compatible 80C51 product portfolio, and we offer them the option to migrate to our broad portfolio of 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit PIC® microcontrollers, at their convenience."
Microchip provides cross-referencing documents, data sheets, and migration support.
8051 Development Support
As with all 8051-compatible microcontrollers, Microchip's 80C51 MCUs can be used with many third-party development tools. Note that some third-party sites still have these devices under "Manufacturer: SST."
Pricing and Availability
"Microchip's 8051 MCUs are available today, and start at $1.22 each, in 10,000-unit quantities."
