STMicroelectronics STM32F-2 Cortex-M3 is Fast and Powerful

This one runs at 120MHz and has crypto, a camera interface, SDIO, USB, Ethernet, and plenty of the peripherals you love. Just in time for Christmas!

Nov 30, 2010 - STMicroelectronics has announced their new high performance STM32 F-2 microcontroller family. Based on the ARM Cortex-M3, The STM32 F-2 runs out of Flash memory at the Cortex-M3's top design speed of 120MHz.

According to STMicroelectronics, STM32 F-2 microcontrollers scream at 150 Dhrystone MIPS while running at 120MHz out of Flash. ST states that CoreMark has benchmarked the F-2 at 188uA/MHz out of Flash, which equals 22.5mA at 120MHz.

The STM32 F-2 also features two USB 2.0 On-the-Go (OTG) ports. USB OTG are slaves, but can also connect to other USB OTG devices. These ports typically connect using those mini-USB ports you see on the side of mobile devices such as GPS units.

The STM32 F-2 is manufactured using ST's 90nm process technology, which allows the core to run at a low 1.2V.

  • Up to 1MByte Flash
  • Up to 128Byte SRAM
  • 4KBytes battery-backup SRAM
  • 528 Bytes OTP (one-time programmable) memory
  • 16-channel DMA
  • 2 Watchdog timers
  • 2 16-bit Motor Control PWM
  • Synchronized AC timer
  • Crypto/hash processor 3DES, AES256/SHA-1, MD5, HMAC (only on STM32F217x and STM32F215x)
  • True Random Number Generator
  • Camera Interface 48MByte/sec
  • 10/100 Ethernet with IEE 1588
  • USB 2.0B OTG FS/HS
  • USB 2.0B OTG FS (FS=Full Speed)
  • 2 CAN 2.0B
  • SDIO (Secure Digital I/O) Interface
  • 6 USARTs support LIN, Smartcard,IrDA, modem control
  • 3 SPIs at 30Mbits/sec
  • 3 12-bit ADCs @ 2M-samples/sec, ±2 LSB typical, ±5 LSB Max
    Up to 24 inputs (see below)
  • 2-channel 12-bit DAC
  • Temperature sensor
  • Digital I/O - 51, 82, 114, or 140 pins
  • LQFP64, LQFP100, LQFP144, UFBGA176, and WLCSP64 packages

STM32 F-2 ADC
The STM32 F-2 has 3 separate 12-bit Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) modules. These ADC modules share 24 input pins. Every single ADC block can use up to 24 channels. It is up to the Engineer to program the number of channels used by each ADC module. The only condition limiting the use of the ADC channels is that the same input cannot be sampled by more than one ADC at the same time. The total unadjusted error for the STM32 F-2 ADC is ±2 LSB Typical, ±5 LSB Max (Max value is based on characterization and is not tested in production).

An STM32 F-2 family hardware evaluation board is available folr full feature evaluation, p/n STM3220G-EVAL. The evaluation board features a touch-screen TFT display and offers connections to all features and peripherals.

STM32F205 Microcontroller Series:

  • 128 Kbytes to 1 Mbytes of Flash
  • up to 128 kbytes of SRAM
  • Real Time Clock (RTC)
  • Multiple 32-bit Timers
  • CRC Calculation Unit
  • True Random Number Generator
  • One USB OTG FS (full speed)
  • 8-channel 12-bit ADC @ 2M-samples/sec
  • 2-channel 12-bit DAC
  • STM32F205 available in LQFP64, LQFP100, LQFP144 or WLCSP64 packages
  • two CAN2.0B ports
  • LCD Interface
  • 60MHz external memory interface supporting Compact Flash, SRAM, PSRAM, NOR, and NAND memories

STM32F207
Same features as STM32F205 plus:

  • Another USB OTG FS
  • Ethernet 10/100 MAC supporting both MII and RMII and with IEEE1588
  • Precise Time Protocol hardware support
  • 8- to 14-bit parallel camera interface supporting up to 27 Mbyte/s at27MHz or 48 Mbyte/s at 48MHz supporting CMOS camera sensor.
  • STM32F207 available in LQFP100, LQFP144 and UFBGA176 packages

STM32F215:

  • 512 KByte Flash
  • Crypto/hash processor 3DES, AES256/SHA-1, MD5, HMAC

STM32F217:

  • Same as STM32F215 with 1 MByte Flash

Pricing and Availability
STM32 F-2 microcontroller family samples are available today to OEM customers, with general availability starting in Q1 2011. The $3.18 for the STM32F205RBT6 with 128 Kbytes Flash, 64 Kbytes RAM in LQFP64 package sells for $3.18 at 10Ku.

In Other News
STMicroelectronics will introduce two new Cortex-based microcontroller families in 2011. The first will be a Cortex-M0 microcontrollers, which targets the huge 16-bit microcontroller market. The second will be Cortex-M4 cores which are based on the Cortex-M3 but also include a Multuply ACcummulate unit (MAC) and a Floating Point Unit (FPU).
